Denied access to the ballot

REP. SARAH UNSICKER DENIED BALLOT ACCESS BY MISSOURI SECRETARY OF STATE, DEMANDS THAT VOTERS BE ABLE TO CHOOSE THEIR CANDIDATES

JEFFERSON CITY, MISSOURI, March 26, 2024

Today, in an ongoing campaign, the Missouri Secretary of State, a staff member of the Missouri Democratic Party, and a labor lobbyist have stripped Missourians of their right to vote for the candidate of their choice in the Missouri Democratic Primary. Sarah Unsicker paid $500 to the Missouri Democratic Party pursuant to state statute, went to the Secretary of State’s office to file, presented all required documents, and was still denied the right to file to run for Governor of Missouri.

Sarah Unsicker is a lifelong Democrat and has been elected four times as a Democratic officeholder. Her commitment to Democratic values, including safe kids, paid workers, and real justice, has never wavered.

The Missouri Democratic Party has not taken a vote to strip Representative Unsicker of her membership. No authorized decision has been made by elected officers of the party. Repeated inquiries to the elected chair, Russ Carnahan, and to the party’s General Counsel, were deferred to a law firm that has no official relationship with the party.

Freedom to access the ballot is an important issue, not only in America, but worldwide. More than half of the world’s population lives in countries that are electing leaders in 2024. Even in countries where citizens do not have freedom, there are elections as a nod to democracy. The United States, which has long been viewed as a beacon of democracy, must have free and fair elections.

Representative Unsicker calls on the Democratic Party to correct this injustice.
