About Sarah

Sarah Unsicker is an attorney, mother of two, and state representative from St. Louis County. After graduating from Washington University Law School, Sarah spent her career advocating for families and children with disabilities — a passion that has continued during her role in the state legislature. She is currently the 83rd District representative and has successfully served in the House since 2016. Representative Unsicker remains committed to the well-being of children and families, combating injustices, promoting universal access to healthcare, and ensuring the rule of law applies equally to everyone. Sarah’s diligent efforts to improve the lives of Missourians led to many accomplishments, including creating a maternal mortality review board, serving as the vice-chair of Statewide Council on Sex Trafficking of Children, advocating for Medicaid expansion and against unnecessary removals, and advocating for independence for people with disabilities. As Governor, Sarah will fight to protect people’s rights, stop injustice and discrimination, and end corruption.

Early Life and Education

Growing up in Texas, Sarah heard stories about her great-grandparent's truck farm in Olivette, Missouri, and her mother’s childhood in Cape Girardeau and Ellisville. Like many children, Sarah did not grow up near her relatives, so church members were closer as aunts and uncles and cousins. Sarah credits growing up in the church and hearing Bible stories for her passion and commitment to justice and to serving her community.

Sarah was born in Denver, Colorado, and later moved to Plano, Texas, where she graduated from Plano Senior High School in 1995. She earned her bachelor’s degree as a Christ College Honors scholar from Valparaiso University in 1999, with a major in German and minors in math and computer science. After working in St. Louis and in Peoria on computer software, programming and databases, Sarah earned her J.D. from Washington University in St. Louis in 2005. As an attorney, Sarah advocated for fairness and equity for families within the legal system. Her years in legal practice gave her an understanding of the intricacies of the law and the importance of equitable representation.

Sarah's commitment to improving the lives of Missourians led her to run for State Representative in 2016. Once elected to office in November 2016, Sarah remained committed to her core values and to improving the lives of her constituents. She will have completed four terms by the end of 2024. Sarah has dedicated her life to public service, justice, and law. Her legal background, coupled with her political leadership, reflects her multidimensional approach to effecting meaningful change.

Political Career

Sarah’s policy focus has brought strong connections in Missouri and beyond. She has worked actively with the Council of State Governments on their Future of the Workplace for People with Disabilities project and attended their state policy sessions on Medicaid. Sarah has also made numerous connections and gained leadership skills through the CALS program through CSG-South and the Toll Fellowship through CSG, which she attended in 2022.
